"And ye shall eat the flesh of your
sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat." - Leviticus 26:29
When two cannibalistic, gravely wounded men stagger into the town of Gehenna, all Hell breaks loose. Infamous outlaw Mad Dog McCall, stuck in the
city jail, must fight for his life to escape. The lonely, intelligent, and snarky Karen must make horrific sacrifices to survive the night against the growing army of the dead.
Together they set upon a journey of biblical proportions, fighting against the living and the infected, hoping against hope to find a safe haven in the middle of Hell.
The Old West can't fathom the zombie hoard that is about to consume it.
And here's what I thought!
What’s not to love about a book when the opening line is “You need to control your whores!”? And is quickly followed up by “How is someone so smart so stupid? You can’t make money if you always insult my customer. You got to be the worst hooker I ever had”
Yep, by page 2 I knew I would love this book!
I’ve read a few short stories by Brant and I love his snarky, bantering writing style. I am also aware of his horror writing style, so I was a bit nervous that this book was going to be one of those books that I wouldn’t want to read in the dark (yes I am a total chicken) however rather than being actually scary this book was more gruesome and definitely comical at times.
Brant writes some really great characters that are hard not to either love or completely hate. This book was no exception to the rule; Karen with her smart-ass mouth and McCall with his façade as a hardened outlaw with an I-don’t-give-a-damn attitude, and then the drunk reverend/doctor, Randy and Ellis and his customers. It was a pretty fantastic combination with the whole crew of crazy character in the western town overrun by zombies.
You gotta give this book a read! I know I’m going to grab the next
in the series!
