but here it is this was a little rant I felt the other day and yet I still believe in every word of it!
I love all thing indie, I really do, there are some super talented people out there; authors, graphic artist, photographer, editors, reviewers, bloggers… the list goes on. However it burns me sometimes when I see indies taking advantage of their supporters. I know… I know I should keep this to myself, but I’m an independent author and I’ve learned some valuable stuff as I’ve worked through my Half-Blood Princess series and as I continue.
I learned that while I know some very smart people… they are not editors (mom :P lol) I’ve met some very reasonably priced editors ( Hence HBP being re-edited)
I’ve learned that while I love what I’ve written and I want to be like the other authors I love and make some bucks on my writing and charge you all $5.99-$7.99 per book… I simply cannot (not only am I not a well known author who is backed by a major publisher, I simply couldn’t in good conscience charge that much for one of my books.
My books range from 220-480 pages and still I don’t plan to ever charge more then 4.50 for one of my books… I read the first book in a series that I thought I could get into until I realized that the cost jumped from $.99 for the first 2 books in the series to $2.99 for the third. Don’t get me wrong I have no problem paying $2.99 for a book except this book was a short story at only 45 pages… not cool.
I get what is happening here as someone who publishes on the kindle I know that if you want to make 70% royalties on what you write you cannot set a price for less than $2.99 but still if it’s only 45 pages take the 35% royalty or do an omnibus. This upsets me because I feel like it’s taking advantage of your readers. Your fans; your biggest supporters. The people who fall in love with the characters you create. As an avid reader I become very invested in the characters in the books I love and enjoy. I often joke that I fall in love with fictional characters daily!
Morganville Vampires (Rachel Caine)- I’m in love with Myrnin!
Mageri Series (Dannika Dark)-Simon *Swooning*
Mark of the Vampires (Laura Wright)-Lucian Roman; I think I see a pattern… Hmm I might have a soft spot for the bad boys.
Gwen Sparks Series (Stephanie Nelson)-Dorian; Awe an angel of death.
Night Huntress (Jeaneine Frost)- it’s a toss-up between Bones, Spade and Ian- I know I’m a hussy for this series lol. Vlad would have been included in that list, but he has his own series now.
Moon Shifter (Katie Reus)- Jayce; again the rugged hard ass bad boy.
My point is I fall easily for strong characters and I become invested; it’s hard to walk away from a series you enjoy. But I’ve done it… ask me how I feel about the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, but that is more about major publishers taking advantage of their loyal readers.
Moving on, I know I’m ranting but I’m sick and in a mood, lol, sorry. Also it irks me to see that there are people out there offering reviews for payment—not cool, don’t take advantage of struggling and new-to-the-world-of-publishing authors.
I’ll stop, I’m not trying to rip anyone apart but it feels like the more time I spend in this world of self-publishing the more I feel like it is overly critical… it would be great if there was more support out there, and not only support from the people you truly know. If you like something you see or read… take the time to let that person know. If you don’t like something be cautious of how you word what you feel. You have a right to your opinion and I think you should share it, but there is no need to be cruel. This is getting off the point… thank you cold medicine, I think I will sleep now.
Oh yeah so my point... Be kind, be supportive and don’t take advantage!
